Our Story

SWIANDA is more than just a name. It connects two worlds:

Switzerland und Uganda

 

But behind this name lies a true story – a story of encounters, trust, and heartfelt connections.

In 2025, Raymond Odong from Purongo in northern Uganda had already been working for several years as a passionate guide for a local safari operator. With great dedication, he accompanied guests from all over the world through the breathtaking landscapes of Uganda and Rwanda. In July of that same year, he had the privilege of accompanying Miriam and Remo Bernasconi from Switzerland on a ten-day safari with gorilla trekking.

It was Miriam and Remo's first trip to Uganda – and a journey that would shape their lives forever. The country quickly captured their hearts. The overwhelming beauty of nature, the incredible diversity of wildlife, and above all, the warmth of the people, who live with such joy, openness, and helpfulness despite their limited means, touched Miriam and Remo deeply.

Raymond was far more than just a guide. With his boundless knowledge of animals, plants, culture, and history, he brought Uganda to life for his two guests. Every day became a special experience, every encounter a lasting memory.

Guests became friends – and a deep, genuine connection blossomed from their shared journey. And so, Raymond shared a big dream with them.

Together with his wife, Topista Adyamo, a trained midwife, he wants to build a birthing center in her home district of Purongo. A place where expectant mothers can receive prenatal care and give birth free of charge in safe, hygienic conditions.

They didn't simply say goodbye; they parted ways as the SWIANDA family.

Miriam and Remo returned to Switzerland, but a part of their hearts remained in Uganda. Driven by the realization that no one can choose where they are born or what opportunities life offers them, they made a deeply held decision: They wanted to help Raymond and Topista realize their dream of a birthing center in Purongo.

So, in April 2026, Miriam and Remo traveled back to Uganda and visited Purongo, Raymond's hometown, for the first time. They were not only introduced to Raymond's family, but were also welcomed into the family with an emotional celebration. The family then decided to transfer two hectares of land to the SWIANDA Maternity project.

Thus, the first important cornerstone of this project was laid.
